Burning sage is an ancient Native American tradition that is known for clearing negative energy, protection and promote overall healing. Smudge sage in your home and surroundings to cleanse energy, improve air quality and remove tension. Smudge yourself to purify your thoughts, words and deeds, to take away any feelings of anxiety, anger after an argument or any negative feelings. Use it to cleanse a new home you have moved into, to set the mood for meditation practice or to recharge sacred things such as crystals and malas.
Besides it's energy cleansing properties, research shows that smudging removes bacteria and pathogens in the air. It's a natural way to get rid of unwanted particles in your home and space.
Burning Instructions
Free your thoughts from negativity and set an intention or prayer for whatever it is you need at this time. Light a candle and hold the tip of the sage stick over the flame until it is lit. Blow out the flame and allow to smolder. Wave the sage around yourself or walk around the perimeter of your space and let the smoke to waft through corners and small spaces, moving inward to fill in the rest of the space with smoke. Extinguish the sage by pressing the light onto a ceramic bowl, abalone shell or pot until the embers wears off.
How To Smudge Yourself
Begin by holding the stick at the heart center and be fully aware of the vibration it brings. Slowly move the stick up towards your throat and over your head, then down through your body ending at the feet. Let your intuition guide you to areas of the body that need to be cleansed and purified.
Remember to always set intentions to bring more power in your smudging ritual. Thank the plant for allowing you to heal yourself and space around you.
